When Jonathon Ferryman, a man perennially under investigation, wakes up one late December morning to find his vice president has died, nothing could be worse than discovering scandal as the cause of death--nothing that is except facing the fact of a hostile incoming Congress that now smells blood. Threatening the administration with gridlock and political fallout, Congressional leaders demand the Vice Presidency as ransom and leave the President little choice but to face down his advisers, including his tenacious and politically savvy First Lady, and make the deal.
With a show of bipartisan good will, the President hopes to leave his political troubles behind him and patch up the problems at home. But citizen Ferryman has a secret. Known only to his wife and clandestine lover, Jonathon Ferryman's bisexuality has led him into an unseemly relationship right inside the White House, and with a zealous prosecutor investigating every inch of the President's life, it can only be a matter of time before this secret is discovered and exploited. With their party now only an office away from controlling two branches of government, the opposition Congress has only one significant enemy inside the administration, and she may be the only one who knows it.
After having propped up her weaker half for so many years and through so many campaigns, Galatea Ferryman will stop at nothing to keep her husband from resigning the Presidency and leaving political life disgraced by a private affair. Leading him back from the brink of disaster and beating back both Congress and the media, the First Lady believes she has defeated her most troublesome opponent and secured the nation's future. But sometimes the ones at closest quarters are hardest to read. And with one speech, everything for which the Ferrymans had worked is gone. Her say having meant so little and her confidence in him having come to naught, the now former First Lady must face the truth about her life, her love, and her loyalty.
