August Wilsons groundbreaking ten-play Pittsburgh Cycle, chronicling the African-American experience through each decade of the 1900s, begins with Gem of the Ocean. When Citizen Barlow, in spiritual turmoil, arrives at Aunt Esters house claiming sanctuary from Caesar, the local constable, he sets into motion a series of events, including a journey to the City of Bones, which leads to startling discoveries and sets him on a course where duty leads to redemption. Wilson brings to the table a rare humanistic and lyrical insight in the American quest to forge one nation, indivisible, with freedom for all. Directed by Daryl V. Jones.
