The Unicorn Fountain - An Original Ballet

The Crockett-Deane Ballet Company is set to premiere the original ballet The Unicorn Fountain. “It’s a romantic and classical story ballet,” says Don Schwennesen, the ballet’s creator and Deane Dance Center co-director, “a fable about a young person overcoming obstacles to fulfill an important mission.”

The Unicorn Fountain is set in the mythical village of Eudora during its annual Seed Time Festival. A rainbow’s appearance has signaled the coming of a magic unicorn in generations past, a beautiful creature able to bring forth a plentiful harvest by drinking from an enchanted fountain. A rainbow hangs over the festival this season, and along with it comes Prince Frederick to award a medal of merit to the most deserving girl in the village. Maidens Charity and Dahlia vie for the honor. One wins the prize. The other’s jealous actions, with help from some magic marionettes, threaten the unicorn and the prosperity it can bring. The outcome is a moral of triumph over adversity.

The ballet’s music is by Alexander Glazunov and arranged by Henrik Jul Hansen, leader of The Sacramento Ballet Orchestra, the Merced Symphony, and his own Gold Country Orchestra in Sacramento.
