The Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts presents the debut of the Sacramento Ballet in A Premiere Event. In the intimate setting of the Studio Theatre, nine works, including two world premieres, and an exclusive champagne & hors d’ oeuvres reception, make it an evening not to be missed.
Artistic Director, Ron Cunningham, begins the evening with his fleet and fluid Mozart Miniature seen only once before in the Sacramento Opera Gala Arias, Overtures & Arabesques. Also on the program is Cunningham’s powerful interpretation of Bolero, which sustains the erotic tension and explosive climax of Maurice Ravel’s musical masterpiece of the same name.
Sacramento Ballet dancer and Emerging Choreographer, Nicole Haskins, contributes her …She is Drowned to the music of Claude Debussy. Created for the Sacramento Ballet’s popular Beer & Ballet program, this work evokes the image of Ophelia seeking comfort in the peace and solitude of water.
Amy Seiwert, Choreographer in Residence with the Smuin Ballet and one of Dance Magazine’s “Top 25 Choreographers to Watch,” creates works of visceral beauty and sculptural grace. The world premiere of her Well, it’s not a cry, charges the atmosphere with the electricity of erotic relationships.
Nolan T’Sani, former New York City Ballet soloist and international Ballet Master, recreates his hilarious satire, Ballet de Murphy , to the music of Erik Satie. Based on the premise that everything that can go wrong will go wrong, this piece proves that ballet is no exception to the rule. Under rehearsed ballerinas collide and run amok in this delightful parody of classical ballet.
Molly Lynch, former Artistic Director of Ballet Pacifica and founder of the International Choreographers Initiative, makes her Sacramento debut with the world premiere of A Journey. Set to the lush, romantic music of Antonin Dvorak, two couples come together, part, and reconnect, seeking relationship in an intimate journey of life.
Sacramento Ballet principal dancers, Kirsten Bloom and Stefan Calka demonstrate the bravura virtuosity of the 19th century classical period with the Don Quixote Pas de Deux. With music by Ludwig Minkus, this famous pas de deux is often showcased in international dance competitions to display technical brilliance.
Sacramento Ballet principal dancer Ilana Goldman puts on her choreographer’s hat with A Brik & Chloe Duet. This playful romp of sophisticated musicality and whimsical movement invites you to hear and see the music of Antonio Vivaldi as never before.
Jared Nelson, former Sacramento Ballet principal dancer and current principal dancer with the Washington Ballet, tops off a spectacular evening of dance with his infectious Jump Jive, to the music of the Brian Setzer Orchestra and Gene Krupa. Originally created for the grand opening of Sacramento architectural landmark, The Money Store, this homage to the fabulous 40’s lights up the stage with toe-taping, high octane energy.
