Happy Birthday, JR! JR, our resident porcupine is a big favorite with many visitors to the Discovery Museum. The California Department of Fish and Game placed JR at the museum in 1991, and he has been educating guests since. Although JR has retired from all outreach programs, he is still a full time education animal, whether on display or appearing in weekend presentations. Many of you have probably seen him enjoy a fresh ear of corn on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon.

JR is a North American Porcupine. This species is the second largest rodent in the United States, the largest being the beaver. Porcupines are native to California, including the foothills and mountains surrounding Sacramento. They are usually found in wooded areas, preferring pine trees above all else. Not only do they efficiently climb trees to eat the needles and leaves, but they also sleep in the branches. Porcupines are nocturnal animals which is why they are not sighted often by people. Being strict vegetarians (or herbivores), their diet consists of leaves, twigs, outer bark of trees and other green plants.

Lastly, to dispel a myth, porcupines do not shoot their quills for protection. To be quilled an animal must come into contact with the porcupine’s body directly. Starting with our Creature Feature at noon highlighting JR, the day will be filled with fun things to do. Let’s give this porcupine the party he deserves!
