Mining the Miners: Gold Rush Games of Chance
July 18, 2009
Add Review/Comment
Gold fever struck shortly after James Marshall’s discovery on Jan. 24, 1848. The local rush to the mountains and the instant rise in prices for goods and services should have been a warning of things to come. Few if any miners got rich mining gold. The gold rush changed the economy of California forever. For almost 30 years the economy of California has been based on the Hide and Tallow trade with the eastern United States and China. Then in what seems like overnight, the business men of California will only accept gold in payment for debts.
Sutter’s Fort, once a busy trading post, now becomes the hub of the wheel leading to the Sierra Nevada Mountains. New commercial ventures are being explored. Sutter is thinking of leasing his Fort for cash. Already there is a bowling alley, a bar, gambling tables and the old administration building being looked at as a hotel!
