California Banknotes! The hide of a standard California cow was worth more in trade than the meat of the animal. Tens of thousands of hides were traded for the finished luxuries of the eastern United States. Each year at round up time the cowboy of California became the most important worker in the hide and tallow industry. The hide on the cow in California was destined to be come shoes in Boston. And the only way to get it there was to have a round up. Modern California’s movie industry created the myth of the Cowboy. Step into the past and meet the real thing! Try your hand at lassoing a cow. What did Sutter’s cattle brand look like? Where did he keep all those cows?
