American River College Theatre opens its 2009-10 season with the energetic musical, "Footloose." Adapted from the popular Kevin Bacon film by Dean Pitchford and Walter Bobbie, the Broadway show features spectacular dance numbers and a score flush with 1980s pop, rock and country tunes.

Accompanied by a live orchestra, "Footloose" follows the story of a teenager who moves from Chicago to a very small town, where his mother has family. He soon discovers the town has a ban on dancing and is quickly caught up in a quest for freedom, dancing, forgiveness, and romance. According to director Sam Williams, "Footloose" celebrates "he redeeming power of love, and the wild exhilaration of dance."

The nearly 50-person cast features the best of American River College’s music, theatre and dance departments --as well as numerous actors from the community, Williams says. "All handle the intricate pop harmonies with an edgy style that will take many people happily back to the sounds of the 80s,” he adds. “Younger audience members will love the “retro” look to the show, as well as exhilarating dance numbers.” The production is a bit of a family affair for director Sam Williams, whose daughter helped choreograph the show, and whose son, Isaac, appears in the ensemble. It will also introduce Conductor Susan Hamre to audiences. Hamre, the newest member of ARC’s music faculty, will be leading a live orchestra of community and student musicians. Rounding out the production team are designers Gail Russell (costume) and Kathy Burleson (set/lights)--both multiple Elly Award winners.

Very fun with some tender moments; the singing was not always on the mark but everything else was great!
