Artist Gale Hart turns her studio into a gallery and, for November 2nd Saturday weekend, a Surreal Urban Hot-Rod Farm Stand with Bruce Gossett’s Fresh, Ripe Delicious show. Familiar and novel. Hot-rod ripe. Deliciously disturbed. Produce label paintings by Bruce Gossett are a spanking fresh interpretation of an old time favorite and are nicely paired with a bonus exhibit of screen printed posters by Blackcat Press

Gossett hand paints a patina’d produce distribution image on his 1940 Chevy pickup truck, fills the back with fresh, local produce and parks it in the center of A Bitchin’ Space. With the gallery walls covered in not-your-grandma’s produce label paintings, it’s easy to see that Gossett was born at the close of the 60’s and spent most of his life immersed in Sacramento’s art and the gearhead culture scene. Like others, this hot rod nut was grown from the BMX and skateboarding scene, but Gossett had the added influence of graphic arts and sign painting tossed in.

A mostly self taught artist, Gossett’s work has also grown warped branches of Mexican pop art, porno, surf iconography and monster movies. These influences are especially strong when he pulls out his silk-screen squeegee. Gossett started Blackcat Press with Ira Cowart in 2000 and specializes in rock and roll posters and t-shirts.

In the end though, it is the easel and the brushes that draw Gossett into long hours of painting…in a swirl of cigarette smoke tucked away in his studio, scratching an inner itch that won’t go away.
