Desmond Murray, the most experienced practitioner and Grand Master of the Weihai Lishi Quanfa, an ancient Daoist physical culture practice based on Daoist breathing techniques, offers free workshops open to the public on Januray 29 and 30 at the UC Davis University Club. His visit is sponsored by the UC Davis Department of Theatre & Dance. Grand Master Murray will be accompanied by his senior students Alex Boyd, Clive Nunnington and Claire Scollan.

The Weihai Lishi Quanfa consists of several wide areas including the Yin arts, some of which are: daoyin (Daoist breathing techniques), kaimen, t’aiji, qigong, partner work (adhering hands, whirling arms/hands); and the Yang arts: feng shou and feng jiao (dynamic work with hands/arms and feet/legs), jiaoli (trunk work), lock-flow movement, and much else. Other areas include among others: Chi Shu or the harmony arts, massage, diet, and extensive work with instruments such as stick, staff, sword, sabre, silk and fan.

The material is broad and deep. Students frequently train for many years and consider the practice a life-long learning. At the same time, Grand Master Murray has demonstrated that the application of these arts in day-to-day life in a variety of work-life situations is effective, rewarding and relaxing.
