Women in celebration, woman in contemplation. Los Angeles native Sonya Fe and Sacramento’s Simona Hernandez bring their insight and experience to La Raza Galería Posada in a shared exhibition opening to the public on Saturday, March 13. The artist reception will be on Friday, March 12. La Raza Galería Posada is a non-profit, multi-disciplinary cultural center and public space serving the Sacramento community, offering Latino/Chicano and Native arts exhibitions, art education programs, workshops, performances/concerts and serves as a community gathering place.
Public programs held during the exhibit will include workshops by both artists, film screenings, artist talks, and other culturally significant and educational programming. A full schedule is listed below.
Fe, one of eight children born to a Jewish-American mother and a Mexican-American father in a memorable Los Angeles neighborhood, says "I paint women because that's what I know, and I understand situations that happen to them – and when I paint children, I don't want to paint them too cutesy, I want to paint them with respect, as little human beings. I have to put human figures in my work. That's how I make contact."
Hernandez also comes from a large family, lived in many Southwestern cities and small towns, eventually settling in the Sacramento area. “My art is figurative…comprised of familiar images: People in celebration and in struggle, buildings and rooms that provoke emotion, and the textures and color of nature” reveals Hernandez. “They all tell a story, pay homage, and are lessons of life.”
Both prefer to work in vibrant oils with bold designs and intense colors. Hernandez also loves printmaking and is involved in a project in progress to make Sacramento’s printmaking artists more visible. Original oils, giclee prints and woodcut prints will be priced to sell in both rooms of the midtown gallery.
