Music Revolution!: Musical Memorabilia from the Golden Age of Latin Rock
April 30-June 5, 2010
Add Review/Comment
Culled from the private collection of Dr. Bernardo D. Gonzalez III, longtime manager of Latin rock legend, Malo, this exhibition will feature rare photos, collectible posters, platinum and gold records and recorded music. The legendary 1960s-1970s musicians of both the Bay Area and Los Angeles--Malo, Santana, El Chicano, War, Azteca, Tower of Power plus Jerry Garcia/The Grateful Dead are the focus.
A collector’s talk with Dr. Gonzalez is set for Thursday, May 13 7pm at the gallery location.
The exhibition will precede the May 22 “Jammin’ in the Park” Festival.
Dr. Gonzalez, known in the music business world as “Dr. Rock,” was instrumental in opening the eyes of the 1960s-1970s world to what became known as Latin Rock. As a manager and concert promoter, he helped many of the musicians who shaped this sound. Originally born out of the blues and R&B, these players fused rock, jazz, and Latin music into a unique form that took both the burgeoning FM airwaves-- and the neighborhoods-- by storm. Nationally, it began when Carlos Santana shook the music world in 1969 with his thrilling performance at Woodstock. He was the first guitarist to skillfully blend fiery rock riffs with Latin, blues and sensuous Afro-Cuban rhythms. Santana’s unique sound opened sonic doors AND the ears of a willing politically aware generation. Malo, El Chicano, War, Azteca and Tower of Power codified Latin Rock and gave the Movement a signature sound.
In the second room of the gallery, the "Art of Sal Garcia" will be a worthy complement. In 2003, Garcia's painting was chosen to be the cover art of Carlos Santana's album, CEREMONY.
Sal Garcia was born in San Antonio, Texas and grew up in California's Central Valley. He has resided and worked in San Francisco for the last two and a half decades. Noted for his unique use of color, Sal Garcia is an artist of unusual range working in painting, printmaking, sculpture and woodcarving. Movement and light are also very important in his technique and reflect his early exposure to the work of the Mexican master Siquieros at Taller Siquieros in Cuernavaca, Mexico.
