The Little Mermaid is Not for Children by Alina Trowbridge, directed by Frank Condon.
When Carrie Milton misses the chance to say good-bye to her dying mother, she is launched into a mid-life crisis of fairy tale proportions. She misses the event in an ill-timed stand against her mother’s manipulative personality, leaving her prey to the manipulations of her elder sister, Elizabeth, and her younger sister, Alicia, and the competition between them for her affection and for control of the family history. Carrie becomes the object that her sisters compete to define, manipulate, cultivate, and win. Her quiet father, Keenan, leaves her alone to face the battle because the battle is the only means by which she can gain the tools and weapons to face the future and her past relationship with her mother, Gloria. Carrie’s friend and co-worker, Laura, attempts to rescue her from her sisters without rescuing her from her grief, but the rescue fails until the time comes for Carrie to rescue Laura from a storm. Gloria and her three daughters all sing and Carrie dreams and thinks of her sisters and herself as mermaids and her mother as the Sea Witch.
The Little Mermaid sequences in the play are Carrie’s dreams, the part of her she protects from her mother and sisters, who nevertheless appear in her dreams.
