New Latin American Film Series every Thursday in July at the Galería; Dr. Fred Dobb, LRGP Film Curator Presents Films from Mexico, Chile, Argentina, Brazil

July 8: Arráncame la Vida (Tear This Heart Out). A husband with sweeping political ambitions and his outwardly docile wife ultimately use one another as means to an end in this lavish, epic period drama from Mexico that unfurls in 1930s and 1940s Mexico, just after the Mexican Revolution.

July 15: Tony Manero. A 2008 Chilean film directed by Pablo Larraín about a man obsessed with John Travolta's character in Saturday Night Fever. It won the top prize at the 2008 Torino Film Festival and was Chile's submission to the 81st Academy Awards for Best Foreign Film. Winner of the Golden Tulip (Top Prize) 2009 in the Istanbul International Film Festival.

July 22: El Arazo Partido (Lost Embrace). The 2004 comedy-drama tells of Ariel Makaroff, the grandson of Holocaust-era Polish refugees, who is currently on a complex search for his personal and cultural identity. Set in Buenos Aires’ vibrant Jewish community, this movie conjures up an irresistible ensemble of engaging and quirky characters that pursue their dreams with humor, passion and an infectious generosity of spirit. Directed by Argentinan Daniel Burman.

July 29: City of Men. Paulo Morelli's film is a pacy, bloody thriller that pays warm tribute to a diverse cross-section of American directors including Quentin Tarantino and Michael Bay. Bullets zing across the screen, heavy artillery is deployed at all times, and Morelli makes great use of the twisty favela streets during some frantic chase sequence. While City of Men isn't an official sequel to Meirelles's lauded picture, City of God, it does serve as a neat continuation of that film's unshakable portrayal of the violence that has beset so many young lives in the slums of Rio de Janeiro.
