Unveiling of Public Art by Renowned Artists Mildred Howard & Deborah Aschheim

Two major public artworks by noted California artists, Mildred Howard and Deborah Aschheim, will be unveiled on during the grand opening celebration of the Robbie Waters Pocket-Greenhaven Library.

Commissioned by the City of Sacramento’s Art in Public Places Program, the artworks are located on the exterior and interior of the building. Deborah Aschheim’s sculpture on the south and east facades of the building’s exterior walls is made of fiberglass and lit from inside with color and changing lights. It is meant to be an illuminated portrait of the book and media collection at the library.

Mildred Howard’s interior artwork is seamlessly integrated into the walls that divide the libraries teen and children’s sections. It is made with small squares of dichroic green and blue glass that are etched with letters of the alphabet that can be read from two sides. The squares of glass are stacked in strips and then pleated together like a fan. The result is a shimmering and constantly changing wall that evokes the river which is a major element of the Pocket-Greenhaven landscape.
