On the Go: The Traveling Sketchbooks of Artists, Architects and Poets
September 16, 2010-January 3, 2011

The exhibition offers a rare opportunity to view sketches by some of the area’s most well-traveled artists, architects and poets. Sketchbooks are usually tucked away from public view, but this exhibition offers a unique opportunity to look at the artist’s process—whether it’s experiencing the architecture of a palace in China, a day in the life of locals in Florence or the urban landscape of New York City.
It includes sketches in a variety of mediums by artists Gina Werfel and Hearne Pardee, both University of California, Davis Art professors, Sacramento artists Gregory Kondos, Stephanie Taylor, and Theo Samuels, Napa area architect Jay Golik, and Julia Connor, Sacramento Poet Laureate 2005-2009.
For these artists the sketchbook serves as an integral part of their working practice. Through the practice of sketching, they learn to pay attention to details of the objects or landscapes they encounter, but might normally overlook. To stop, study and really see requires the patient examination that sketching supports. Sometimes these sketches are precursors for a more monumental undertaking, other times they are fully realized works of art, but most times they are exercises in observation.
The exhibition can be seen in 10 display cases throughout Terminal B (6 of which are restricted to ticketed passengers).
