Early black filmmakers attempted to show the full humanity of African Americans with story lines and themes that countered prevailing ideologies about blackness. Because Black cinema visually brought our stories to life, it remains an important part of American culture. Without the black independent film movement, there would be very few black films today. Black cinema continues to be inextricably linked to social issues in our community. While black filmmakers have broken many barriers, there is still much work to be done and discussions to be had about the inequalities, relevance, perceptions and historic value of Black Cinema.

Join us as we explore the messages, images, and importance of Black Cinema with artist Milton 510; Film and Screenwriting Instructor (Art Institute of CA/Consumnes River College), Matt Perry; Mr. Duke Williams, Black Cinema, Inc; and special guest William Crain, Director of Blacula.
