From humble beginnings great things may come. Exhibiting a 30 year body of work. Check out his adventures, from scavenging through the slums of Bankok to studying art at Dartmouth University. Found objects are woven together to become compelling stories. This is a show not to be missed!

    Chusak Majarone
    B. 1954 Bangkok, Thailand

"I was born on a house boat that traveled up and down the Chao Praya River, about the time I was born a highway was built and trucks took the job of boats. My parents lost their lively hood and we slipped into poverty. I was the 4th of eight children and my parents who married at 15 had not finished grade school. This being said, I spent my childhood in the slums of Bangkok. I learned to make do with whatever was around. I collected rubber bands and sold them to classmates, bottle caps, gum wrappers anything that could be used as a toy or sold to make a few baht. I saw a new world in the refuse of others.

My parents did what they could to make a living; mom sold homemade lunches to local school kids and traveled the country selling cosmetics. My dad drove cabs and chauffeured the wealthy. In spite of their financial misfortune they saw that their lack of education had held them back and they were determined to see their children succeed where they had been unable to. We were pushed to do well in school. Had the Vietnam War not altered my path I would be a teacher in Bangkok.

I came to the United States in 1975, and my world changed. In the U.S. the rules of behavior and family ties were turned upside down. I was free of strong family expectation and exposed to art in a new way. My path came clearly into view, and I enrolled at Bristol Community College, continuing my studies at UMass Dartmouth. I began my training as a painter, but quickly began to explore mixed media. My years as a child junk collector were beginning to reveal themselves in my work. When paint was too expensive, I began to experiment with crayon and ink. I became fascinated with the works of Tapies and Twombly both rich with textures and color. I admired Ben Shahn's use of line to tell a story. Joseph Cornell and Rauschenberg's art encouraged me to move off the canvas and utilize my prized found objects in my work.

I draw inspiration as much from a wonderfully mangled bottle cap, as I do from Tapies, or Tamayo. I hope my work helps you, the viewer see that indeed, from humble beginnings great things do come."

I remember Chusak's work when he first came to the states. The carved Liberty Bell stands out. What ever became of that piece? Best to you and your continued good works.
