Poetic License: Portraits of Sacramento’s Poets features 45 portraits of Sacramento's poets by local artist Suzanne Johnson.

Johnson was commissioned by the Sacramento Metroropolitan Arts Commission (SMAC) in 2006 through 2008 to create portraits for a deck of cards. The portraits honor poets who were active in Sacramento during the creation and solidification of the poetry scene during the 1960s, ‘70s, and ‘80s. The result was 56 intimate portraits—45 of which are featured in this exhibition—drawn in graphite by Ms. Johnson.

Ms. Johnson studied art at Sacramento City College and U.C. Davis and has been active in the Sacramento poetry community for decades.

The reception includes readings by Julia Connor, Patrick Grizzell, Ann Menebroker, and Kathryn Hohlwein, to name a few.
