In Oaxaca: Textiles & Alebriges, you have a great opportunity to enjoy two “artesano” art forms: Textiles & Alebrijes from Oaxaca, México. Alebrijes are fantastical wooden and paper maché sculptures. The first “alebrijes” originated from unsettling dreams/hallucinations by Oaxacan Pedro Linares in the 1930s (very Kafka-ish, right?). During these dreams Linares encountered these animals that kept repeating one word/mantra: alebrijes, alebrijes, alebrijes, alebrijes…To learn more about the history of alebrijes visit the gallery to get a personalized tour.
In addition to 2nd Saturday receptions, there are several special events related to the exhibit:
-April 13 6:30pm: Workshop: Begin making your own alebrije with Master alebrije artist from Oaxaca, Mexico.
-April 14, 6:30pm: Join La Raza Galeria Posada and Council General of Mexico in welcoming: Eleazar, Sergio and Joel, the three artist exhibited for a reception. Oaxacan food provided.
-April 15, 7pm: Films at the Galería: ¡Qué viva México! Bring pillows and comfort food to watch one of the best films ever made films about Mexico.
-April 16, 1pm: Workshop: How to begin your own textile/rug. Bring your neighbor, cat, and friends to this workshop.
-April 21, 7pm: Thursday Night Films at the Galería: Animas Trujano.
-April 28, 7pm: Thursday Night Films at the Galería: The Last Conquistador
-April 29 or May 6, 7:30pm: Music Concert: Artist TBA.
-May 5, beginning at 4:30pm: Join us at the back patio for an afternoon to mingle and then at 7pm join for Thursday Night Films at the Galería.
-May 12, 7pm: Thursday Night Films at the Galería
