MRQ BAND, 10pm: Mike Regina and Joe Prassa met back in '71 at LA's Loyola University, and started playing music together almost immediately. Regina was a smart street kid from Brooklyn and Prassa was a cowboy from Arizona, born in Chicago. After gigging hard as a duo, they joined the LA band Pork Pie Hat, named after a tune by Charles Mingus.
Enter Pete Kmeto, 2010 (of Sacramento's former jazz/funk bands Missing Pieces and Downstroke). Kmeto, a bassist and accordion player, found himself impressed with Regina's original tunes while jamming with the boys at Fox & Goose. Kmeto introduced Steve Namle (former House Drummer at the famous Palomino in North Hollywood) in to the mix and next thing you know, this foursome had a legit band and a bunch of catchy, original tunes by Regina.
LA's Alina Eden, a recent transplant to Sacramento, came in to the picture to sing back up for Regina. Eden had previously found herself uninspired by the rigid technicality of studying classical voice at both California's Idyllwild Arts Academy and The Boston Conservatory, and was looking for a singing opportunity with more "soul". Regina and Eden started sharing the lead on the new tunes- And now, what BEGAN as the "Mike Regina Quintet", became simply, "MRQ."
Mostly originals and some cover favorites, if you like Tom Waits or Dan Hicks you'll love "MRQ!"
Blaze and Kelly (Idaho) open, 8:30pm.
