California’s Gold Rush in Miniature offers a close-up look at an indelible part of the Sacramento region’s history--California’s 19th century Gold Rush--through miniature replicas of historic Gold Rush era buildings by artist Tony Quattrociochi.

Tony Quattrociocchi began creating miniatures in 1974 after traveling to the historic Gold Country town of Columbia. Since then, he has traveled to many other California Gold Rush locales creating miniature replicas of their buildings along the way.

The first step in Quattrociocchi’s process is taking photographs of buildings that interest him. From these reference photographs, as well as other archival materials such as historic photographs, Quattrociocchi then begins replicating each building as precisely as possible. Hundreds of hours are devoted to producing the construction materials alone. From the door hinges to the roof shingles, each piece is individually handcrafted in a painstaking process before being added to the structure.

“I love Gold Rush era buildings and wanted to know these buildings intimately. Each one appeals to me differently,” says Quattrociocchi. Today, his collection includes more than 75 miniature replicas of Gold Rush era buildings.

Over the last several years, Mr. Quattrociocchi has suffered from Macular Degeneration, “Macular Degeneration… has slowed me down a bit, but as long as I can see, I will keep doing what I love to do,” says Mr. Quattrociocchi.

The exhibition can be seen in 10 display cases throughout Terminal B (6 of which are restricted to ticketed passengers).
