Verge Movie Night: Marwencol

Add Review/Comment
Verge Movie Night presents: Marwencol. Mark Hogencamp didn’t set out to be an artist; a horrific beating on April 8, 2000 set him on that path. The brain damage he sustained robbed him of both his memories and his desire to drink; thereby freeing him from his lifelong struggle with alcoholism. As he slowly recovered from his injuries, he retreated into an imaginary World War II era-village that he assembled and photographed in his back yard, which he named Marwencol. Using painstakingly created action figures as his proxies, Hogencamp works through his issues of fear, loneliness, and rage. The resulting photographs are poignant, dark, and altogether human.
There will be a post-film panel discussion moderated by Becky Grunewald featuring local artist and former Short Center instructor Skinner, Nelson Gallery Director Renny Pritikin, and a third special guest TBA.
