Centennial Celebration for California Women's Suffrage
October 9-October 10, 2011
Add Review/Comment
October 10, 2011 marks the 100th anniversary of California women winning the right to vote; nine years ahead of the 19th amendment granting women in the United States the vote with the exception of Native Americans for whom the vote came a few years later. It was a hard won fight and of course there was fierce opposition. California was the sixth state for women to win the vote, following Washington State.
In collaboration with state affiliates and several individuals and organizations, the California Women Suffrage Centennial Committee has planned multiple events scheduled for the whole family through out the State Capitol area and the California Museum in Sacramento. Join in the festivities by wearing 1911 period dress or costumes. It is Columbus Day weekend and an opportunity to celebrate the Centennial. There will be exhibits, film screenings, living history presenters, community and public officials, music, reenactments of the debates, and reception. Come and dress up in fashions of that era and be a part of a promenade from the California Museum to the State Capitol North Steps.
