FESTIVALS

Panteon de Sacramento
October 29-October 30, 2011
Add Review/Comment
Culminating the festivities again this year, La Raza Galería Posada will transform this Midtown location into Panteon de Sacramento (Sacramento’s Cemetery). This is a two day/night outdoor display of fifty large, colorful altares, built by families, individuals, area artists, and local non-profit organizations. The creative altars, 12 feet long and 6 feet wide, display the traditional flower of the dead, Cempazuchitl (Marigold), papel picado, candles, photos of the deceased, Pan de Muerto (Mexican sweet bread), and personal artifacts. There will be live music, DJ, poetry readings, performances, and more.
The Panteon de Sacramento replicates a small town environment in Mexico during Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). In the open air, with the church bells ringing, visitors will be transported to a commemoration similar to a small pueblo with colorful altares honoring those loved in life who have passed on.
