La Raza Galería Posada, Sacramento’s Latino art and cultural center, will offer a six-week gallery exhibition, three workshops and a culminating event, Panteón de Sacramento, for “To Dance Beyond the Grave”: this year’s commemoration of Dia de los Muertos/Day of the Dead.
Día de los Muertos is a traditional Meso-American holiday dedicated to the ancestors; it honors both death and the cycle of life. In Mexico, neighbors gather in local graveyards to share food, music and fun with their families and extended community, both living and departed. In Sacramento, Día de los Muertos has been celebrated since the early 1970s, commensurate with the Galería’s founding in 1972, 39 years ago.
This year, funded by the James Irvine Foundation, the Galería exhibitions will feature 8-10 ofrendas honoring iconic artists, in all genres, whose life and work has influenced the work of living artists. Pablo Picasso, Frida Kahlo and Victor Jara are just a few examples of some of the artists to be honored. The exhibiting artists will be selected in September after responding to the Galería’s call to artists. In the second gallery, Southern California artist Martha Rameriz-Oropez will exhibit her original illustrations from the book The Toltec I-Ching.
