The Barton Art Gallery presents In Public, an exhibition of street photography by Diane Tempest. Diane Tempest has traveled the world with her camera, documenting people and places from some of the most remote regions to the greatest cities in the world. In her first solo exhibition she has chosen to feature images of urban counterculture that she has collected on her journeys.
Tempest, who opened the Sacramento craft gallery Blooming Art in 1994, and later, Galleria Tempest in San Francisco, recently studied under Paul Estabrook at Sacramento City College. She was first struck by the power of photography when she saw a book of images by Diane Arbus. The photographs in this show capture a similar esthetic to Arbus’ portraits–the humanity of people who are living on the fringe of society.
The characters are captured on the street, many at festivals or events where costumes and other regalia play an important role in defining the moment. Some shots are candid, taken with a telephoto lens, as in the color photograph “Walking with Jesus”. Others are composed into formal portraits as seen in the black & white study, “Miler and Family”. Taken as a body of work, In Public celebrates the joy and complexity of the human condition with a compassionate outlook on those who are swimming in the undercurrent of contemporary society.
