Sombras de Antepasados Ovlidado (Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors) is a contemplative and rich magical photographic exhibition from Brian Collett.
All places have a sense of time and legacy. The impression of California as a nascent landscape, is attributable to the tsunami of Manifest Destiny that swept across the country and engulfed California with still-reverberating ideological shockwaves. Compounded by Gold Rush fervor, massive agricultural conversions and then followed by the ongoing water wars and subdivisions, the place of California has been remade and re-invented again and again.
The high Sierra Nevada has remained--at least in part--aloof from these waves of change. She is a landscape profound in her austerity, with glacially sculpted valleys and crests, bonsai lodgepole pines defiantly eking out an existence in the smallest granite crevices. The flat rock at the edge of a meadow holds the hollow depressions of ground-rock mortars for food processing and scattered flakes of obsidian gleam with memories of hunters crafting arrow points and spearheads in pursuit of mountain game. The path through a mountain gap is an ancient route, the most logical and least impeded way from one watershed to the next; tracing these paths becomes a rite of passage.
These images ponder this legacy-rich landscape. Even today the place commands attention. Each step matters and the senses are rewarded with an array of stimuli that engage and remind us that we are not visitors but a part of this extraordinary timeless landscape. We walk as people have walked these caminos for hundreds, perhaps thousands of years. With heightened senses, the imagination is enriched; in the shadows, the clouds and reflections, in the twisted form of an old juniper, the etched relief of granite cliffs, the dim misty light of daybreak, the commanding outcropping at the top of the pass...the spirit may be forgotten but still remains.
