As the school year is underway, parents hope their children will study hard and get good grades so that they can succeed in life. Yet the problem is that most families are so busy going here and there and doing this and that—working, taking kids to soccer games, ballet lessons, swim lessons, music lessons, and on and on, that there little time to really sit down and connect with one another.

Studies from the Center on School, Family and Community Partnerships at Johns Hopkins University, show that family involvement results in better school attendance, increased motivation and self-esteem, decreased drug and alcohol use and less violent behavior. This all translates into higher grades, test scores and graduation rates.

Author Dr. Marlena E. Uhrik’s new interactive book–My Family Matters to Me subtitled, The ABC’s of Home Improvement: A Special Book for Families–presents numerous fun and educational activities for families to do together in an A-to-Z approach. Uhrik’s way to better learning and quality time together is outlined in her TLC Formula for Family Fun: T---Time, L---Love, C---Communication.

Designed to create stronger family relationships – which, in turn, aids school performance–My Family Matters to Me requires spending time together. The only things needed are pencils, creativity and five minutes out of a busy day.

Uhrik has worked with thousands of children, families, and teachers from around the world. Her award-winning book, In Grandpa’s Hands, Guidebook for Family Day Care Providers, and My Family Matters to Me are based on her experience as an educator, wife, mother, and grandmother. In 2009 she was awarded the U.S. Presidential Award for Service as the founder of The Kids’ Breakfast Club, a community engagement model that has served over 150,000 meals to children and their families. She is recognized in the U.S. Congressional Record for her outstanding contribution to children, families and communities.
