Las Posadas

What are the posadas? They are a re-enactment of the biblical story of Joseph and Mary looking for lodging. The posadas are celebrated during nine days of December (usually Dec 16-Dec 24). These celebrations have been held for over 400 years in Latin America after the arrival of the Catholic religion. The introduction of this tradition was facilitated as the Mexica (the people living in the Central Valley of Mexico during the Spanish arrival) had a similar tradition during the month of Panquetzaliztli (Dec 7-Dec 26). During this month the Mexicas celebrated the virgin birth of Huitzilopochtli, the God of the Sun (described by Diego Durán on the Durán Codex). La Raza's posadas will help re-enact this celebration in the urban center of Sacramento.

Come and gather at La Raza Galería Posada for singing and festivities, held for the 1st time in Midtown Sacramento. Join and learn traditional Mexican carols, break a pinata, and celebrate with the entire family.
