What happens when you mix a possessive stalker, a love triangle, and Whitney Houston’s greatest hits? You get The Bodyguard. Starting off with a bang (literally), the production follows the story of Secret Service agent Frank Farmer (the dashing Judson Mills) and his latest assignment — protecting international pop superstar Rachel Marron (Canadian R&B star Deborah Cox) from a persistent stalker (the chiseled and silent Jorge Paniagua). Farmer’s and Marron’s initial hatred for each other quickly turns to love as the obsessive fan creeps into the star’s personal life.
While based on the 1992 Oscar-nominated film starring Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston, the musical thriller gets a modern update with selfies, halograms, and use of the word “viral” throughout the show.
Focusing more on power ballads and less on a storyline, the musical is flashy, nostalgic, and gloriously campy. But that’s what makes this guilty pleasure so great. Hearing Deborah Cox and Jasmine Richardson belt out Houston’s timeless hits — “I Will Always Love You,” “Run to You,” “Saving All My Love,” to name a few – with the same bravado of the late diva, you just can’t help to “dance with somebody,” especially during the spirited finale.
The best scene of the entire show is when the pop diva went undercover at a karaoke bar. Not only will you get to swoon over Cox’s pitch-perfect rendition of “One Moment in Time,” you’ll get to laugh at Mills’ spoken word version of “I Will Always Love You.”

Note: Deborah Cox is not scheduled to perform during the Thursday and Saturday matinee performances.
