Article: Anderson, Ebert shine at Three Stages

Not that guitarist Anderson needs a small hall to reach an audience. She is nothing if not an affable and expansive performer, and she backs that up with the cred of super-clear and lightning-fast fingerpicking. On Saturday, Anderson performed mostly solo the first half of the program. She began on the classical guitar, with a journeyman take of "Recuerdos de la Alhambra," and a potent turn on "Leyenda." After some song melodies, she switched to the harp guitar – a curious-looking, two-necked instrument offering six extra bass strings. Her performance on it was the highlight of the evening.
Anderson put the instrument to good use on the original "View From Space," her strumming hand coaxing a luscious thread of harmonics from the instrument, while her left hand fingered chords and arpeggios. The extra bass notes rang through, deliciously.
Ebert joined Anderson in the second half, along with percussionist Raul Rodriguez and bassist Ariane Cap. The Anderson-Ebert pairing proved intriguing. Ebert plays the highly syncopated rumba style of nuevo flamenco made popular by bands such as the Gipsy Kings. The music was buoyant and saucy – what makes nuevo flamenco so infectious. Anderson and Ebert musically spoke as like minds.

Article: Sacramento Guitar Orchestra in concert at Sac State today
Sacramento Bee - Dec 18, 2011

Savino said that in the 17th century guitar orchestras were numerous throughout southern Spain, called "consorts of lute players."
They fell out of favor in the 20th century with the dogma of Andrés Segovia, who was an advocate of the classical guitar as a solo instrument.
Guitar ensembles are now often seen in college and conservatory programs, as well as at summer guitar camps.
However, in Sacramento, "the idea of a standing orchestra that exists on its own … that's unique," Savino said.
In today's concert the focus will be less on dogma and more on simply relishing the pleasure of guitar sound, both for player and audience, Williams said.
"This is geared for guitarists that want to have fun and be part of something big," he said. "And there are a lot of them out there."

That nonprofit is bringing a host of artists to the area next year, and a fitting example of its diverse lineup can be seen in the upcoming appearance of guitarist Muriel Anderson.
Known for her virtuoso fingerpicking, Anderson combines folk, blues, classical and flamenco. She does so by performing on the standard, the classical and the rarely used steel string harp guitar.
She will appear Saturday and next Sunday on Stage Two of Folsom Lake College's Three Stages performing arts center. Anderson will be joined by noted nuevo flamenco guitarist Raughi Ebert, best known for his work with the duo Tierra Negra. Peruvian percussionist Raul Rodriguez and bassist Ariane Cap will also be part of the mix.

Eliot Fisk performed a free concert including two dances by Enrique Granados - Andalusa and Danza Triste; Six Harpsichord Sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti, The Red Violin Caprices by John Corigliano and three works by Agustín Barrios- Danza, Cueca and Diana Guarani.
Following the utterly heroic output of artistic and technical brilliance, Fisk answered questions from the audience about his practice habits, his thoughts on the state of guitar education and music education in general and what young artists need to do to inspire their communities.

Can't say enough good things about this event. Music is very powerful and in my opinion, should be used for good purpose. Hope this event gets enough publicity.
