    California Musical Theatre

    Comment on Facebook

California Musical Theatre is Northern California’s premiere producer and presenter of musical theatre--the largest nonprofit musical theatre in California. Since its inception in 1951 under an open-air, circus-style big top, the theatre has grown to become the most successful performing arts organization in California's heartland. Between the summer Music Circus season, Broadway Sacramento, and The Cosmopolitan Cabaret, California Musical Theatre entertains over 300,000 patrons every year.

The singing is, of course, top-notch, with voices that seem to be created just for these songs. If there were to be a central theme to the choices of songs I suppose it would have to do with relationships—mostly the various stages of boy-girl relationships, but also parent-child relationships. While most musical reviews have an even number of men and women in the cast, this one has only two men to the three women, which made the constantly changing dynamic of which boy was with which girl much more interesting. The two-act, five-actor revue pulls from the breadth of the Rodgers and Hammerstein catalog, mixing well-known chestnuts such as "Oh, What A Beautiful Morning" from the groundbreaking "Oklahoma!" to the delightful "That's the Way It Happens" from the obscure 1953 show "Me and Juliet."
