The longest continuously operating art museum in the West, the Crocker Art Museum was founded in 1885 and remains the leading art institution for the California Capital Region and Central Valley. The Museum, which is housed in one of the finest examples of Victorian Italianate architecture in the United States, offers a diverse spectrum of special exhibitions, events, and programs to augment its collections of California, European, and Asian artworks, and International Ceramics.

In October 2010, the museum debuted a 100,000 square foot expansion that was constructed to ensure the Museum remains an ever-more-vital cultural center and resource for the community, as well as for art-lovers from near and far. The expansion enables the Museum to dramatically increase and improve its offerings, providing all members of the public with a more diverse range of public programs and exhibitions and an enhanced opportunity for meaningful encounters with great works of art.

From his iconic scenes of the Sacramento River Valley to views of his time spent in Napa, Yosemite, the Southwest, and Europe, his bold colors and sweeping scenery bring a unique view of the outside world to the indoors realm. He went from rock star of his day, with illustrators being all the rage, to dismissed by art critics who found abstracts more compelling than the slice-of-life paintings that Norman Rockwell created for 65 years.

The superb display, "American Chronicles: The Art of Norman Rockwell," which opened Saturday at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento and runs through Feb. 3, makes you wonder what the critics were thinking.

It also makes you smile, laugh, think, and, in a couple of instances, tear up. Collapse
