Chautauqua Playhouse

With the help of the theatre community, the use of theatre patron Bill Wahl’s home as office space, donations from the community, and after several failed attempts to keep the company downtown, the group, now a non-profit organization, opened in the La Sierra Community Center in April of 1985.

Season subscribers and the theatre-going community enjoy a variety of new and traditional comedies, dramas, original plays, and musical reviews, with a wide range of ethnic and cultural appeal. The group has been hailed by the Sacramento Bee as “one of the area's most consistent companies."

Wicked wit and dead-on social satire wrapped in a Victorian confection of dual identities, matters matrimonial, and the provenance of a particularly pertinent handbag. Wilde's exquisitely delicious dialogue and hilarious turns of phrase are an irresistible delivery system for his subversive look at society.

      Dearly Departed is one of the most enjoyable plays I have seen in some time. I'm sure part of the reason is that I love humor and it is sometimes hard to find local plays that hit it out of the park in the very first scene as this one did. Every single scene had hilarious moments and a few were very sweet also. A nice mix that is difficult to find. I agree with many of the reviews I have seen so far but I disagree wholeheartedly with GivePeopleHonestReviews who singled out one actor specifically as one who stumbled over her lines. I found Lucille delightful, funny and only as over-the-top as the part required. My only disappointment is that we didn't get to hear her sing a solo. I've heard this actress sing in other plays and I was very impressed. I'm left wondering if the reviewer might actually be one of the actors that portrayed one of the 'brothers'. How else to explain his attitude? Regardless, if you dare risk rolling in the aisles, see Dearly Departed. Collapse

      The untimely death of Bud Turpin forces his loveably dysfunctional family together in planning and attending his funeral with hilarious results. As the family members work though a spin cycle of unexpected events and clashing personalities we start to think Bud might be the LUCKY one. But by the end, his clan of the good, the bad, and the hungry has learned many life-lessons and the importance of family. The opening monologue was very funny - listen closely because it is delivered deadpan (pardon the pun). The part played by the clueless mother who named her many children after celebrities was well written and acted. There was a 'disconnected' scene where a gun appears that seemed out-of-character with the rest of the play. Otherwise it is mostly well written, the actors had a great time and it shows. Great music! Collapse

I can't help but notice 'big daddy' also went on to name every actor - with the exception of the two who played brothers...Favoritism much? Collapse

      I was pleasantly surprised when I saw this production. The stage pictures worked well with the material and the set was pitch perfect. While the ensemble was solid overall and well cast, standout performances came from Wade Lucas, Jason Titus, Patty Thiel, Vincent Keene, and Shana McCarl. Some of the writing, while meant to be funny, seemed a little mean spirited at times without benefit to storytelling, and some scenes were superfluous to the story. Overall, the play was a fun experience. The writing is what keeps it from 4 or 5 stars, not the performances of the dilligent cast. Collapse

      I saw the May 14 showing, and it was hilarious from the get-go! The acting was superior all-around, from Patty Thiel superb as Marguerite, the hell-and-brimstone never-give-in mom of ne'er-do-well Royce (Vince Keene was great - his posture in a chair is a hoot!) to, especially, Carolyn Gregory as the tragic Lucille. Her dramatic/comedic rendering brought tenderness, tragedy and Alice Kramden-esque wisdom to Lucille. Her scene with Nadine, bringing out as it did the unfairness of life, was quite emotional and wonderfully delivered. And the five-woman choir with dead-pan faces was a great bit - I wish I had a record! Boots Martin was quite wonderful in her dual roles, bringing character and warmth as easily as a skeeter bite on a hot Texas night. Lisa Derthick was quite watchable and funny as Lisa. And Shana McCarl brought some nice comedic moods to Delightful. The sold-out house "got it" for most of the jokes, and the end came far too soon. A most enjoyable night! Collapse

      You must see this play. It is funny, heartwarming, and will leave you laughing. There are a few profane words and some adult content, so I'd keep it to 12 and older. The young lady who hardly says a word in the entire play steals the show. You have to see it to understand. You won't be disappointed! Great cast, and if you love golden oldies from country music, you'll really love it! Don't miss this one. Worth every penny. Collapse

      You will love this play, BUT.... Bring someone along with you: someone who thinks humor only exists on the Comedy Channel. The laughs are endless, and exceptionally well delivered by the cast. Bring someone with you who believes plays will be boring. They will definitely not be bored! The dialogue crackles! And bring someone with you who needs to see that true humanity can shine through, even in the most backward of situations ...even if that humanity glimmers pretty feebly from time to time. The dialogue is great, but the superb cast it what raises this romp to just one tick below top marks (well, I never give a five). Chatauqua Playhouse has another hit on its hands. Don't miss this one! Collapse

      We attended Vampyre last weekend to see a good friend of ours who was performing and to support local theater. Our friend was EXCELLENT in the part of Roger (put an end to any gambling thoughts I may have had) .. as were ALL of the other characters in the play - David Garrison as Lord Ruthven (you were excellent and scared us silly), Lady Harwood (PERFECT uptight overbearing Aunt..) and Aubrey (I was ready to call the paddy wagon for you poor boy), and Melissa and Lydia were perfect as the nieces who fall prey to Lord Ruthven's "seduction". And ALL the supporting characters were very very talented and gave believable and excellent support to the show. Even our 89 year old grandma loved it! I recommend it to all! Collapse
