Originally founded in 1951 as the California Junior Museum, the Discovery Museum was designed as a space where children could experience science and nature through interactive programs and exhibits. We’ve operated for 60 years as a 501(C)(3) nonprofit agency, supplying informal science education for 19 counties in the greater Sacramento area. Now the Powerhouse Science Center, the campus is one of the Sacramento region’s premier institutions with an emphasis on STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) education and hands-on learning, and is about to get even better!

The new Powerhouse campus will be located downtown Sacramento at the site of the historic PG&E power station building. Located right on the Sacramento River and fifteen minutes north of the California State Railroad Museum, this central location will allow for a twenty-first century Science center that our state capital can be proud of. This move will allow us to expand the population we serve.

Note: The Powerhouse Science Center will be closed through September 2, 2016 for an exhibition install.
