Mardie Dalzell Driftmier creates images that are explorations of the natural world – both real and imagined. She uses bold color, exploring lines and layered shapes to produce works at the meeting point of the representational and the abstract. These explorations on paper often move in unexpected directions during the process of creation – a process Milan Kundera calls “ The Wisdom of Uncertainty. “ Mardie is also a colorist who combines vivid hues, a tactile knowledge of the natural world and a strong drawing tradition. Her works celebrate the transcending power of nature and a love of the discovery process.
Mardie grew up in the Ohio River Valley in Appalachia. At a young age she was encouraged to wonder, to wander and to explore the natural beauty of the foothills and river valley around her small town. She now resides in Northern California. Her love of nature continues in the West where she enjoys hiking, outdoor adventure and a love for both visual and performing arts.
