Call for Nominations: California Poet Laureate

Now is your chance to nominate the California poet of your choice! The California Arts Council is seeking nominations for the next California Poet Laureate.

The California Poet Laureate must:
-Provide a minimum of six public readings in urban and rural settings across California for the purpose of educating community, business, and state leaders about the value and importance of poetry and creative expression
-Undertake a significant cultural project that extends through a two-year term. One of the goals of this project must be to bring the poetic arts to students who might otherwise have little opportunity to be exposed to poetry

Eligibility:
-Nominations shall be limited to current residents of California
-Nominees must have lived in California for at least 10 years

Review Criteria:
-Recognized for excellence of their work
-Known for a significant body published work
-Widely considered to be a poet of stature
-Willing to undertake a specific project during their term

How to Nominate:
Poet Laureate nominations may come from people in the field of literature (poet may also nominate themself) and must be emailed to poetlaureate@arts.ca.gov.

The California Arts Council is designated to recommend individuals to the Governor of California for the position of California Poet Laureate. The California Poet Laureate shall be appointed by the Governor. This appointment requires Senate confirmation.
