Call to Artists: City of Rancho Cordova Utility Box Art Wraps

The City of Rancho Cordova is committed to fostering a beautiful and creative community. To support this commitment, the City is seeking artists or artist teams to propose art wrap designs for utility boxes and possibly other fixtures within the community. It's anticipated that approximately 20-25 boxes/fixtures will be wrapped as part of this program.
The artist will receive a $750 stipend per utility box art wrap design selected. The stipend is exclusive of costs to install the artwork wrap. For additional program details, refer to the Artist Prospectus.
All proposals must be received by the City no later than September 30, 2020 at 5pm PST.
This schematic utility box layout diagram identifies four sides and top. Use it as a key to identify where each proposed image would be displayed. SMUD utility boxes and City signal boxes vary substantially in size and shape. Artists are encouraged to view utility box locations shown in map, and viewable via the provided link, and to identify a proposed box location for each submittal.
Submittals for City signal boxes must include images for all sides of both pedestals or a single pedestal in the case of both Box 3 and Box 19. Artists must provide images that can be appropriately sized to the proportions of SMUD or City signal boxes. Final sizing of images will be completed after artists have been selected.
Detailed designs of each side must be submitted as digital images scaled to print at 8.5’’ x 11” or printed on 8.5’’ x 11” paper. Each image or sheet must be labeled to identify its location on the utility box. Actual utility boxes have various vents, doors, handles, locks, etc. and utility stickers will be applied following art wrap installation, please consider these factors in your design.
Successful solutions for SMUD boxes and City signal boxes will vary substantially. Artists will be required to select the box type and, if selecting the City signal box format, provide a design that can be applied as a paired box design solution.
