The “built environment” refers to human-made surroundings that provide the setting for human activities. Increased population, global climate change, and the environmental stresses brought on by both of these factors can make people more aware of how the built environment affects their quality of life, perspective on community, and sense of who they are in the world. For example, the austere concrete urban structures of 1950s Le Cobusier-style architecture in New York City intended to form harmonic common spaces, but in actual life they emptied thriving integrated neighborhoods of their character. Current trends to fill in cities with development that encourages walking or bike riding and movements in urban farming and homesteading produce certain emotional states or create atmospheres that might affect community coherence in different ways.

Call for Artworks
Rincon Consultants is hosting an art exhibit at its Sacramento offices on J and 48th streets. We seek artworks that feature the effects of the built environment on people, including how they flourish or feel pain. Most encouraged are works that both aesthetically celebrate the built environment and raise questions about its effects in specific situations. Rather than posit merely a sentimental view of the landscape or an apocalyptic perspective on urban development, this show seeks to highlight questions that artists raise in their works about the cities in which they live and share their creativity.

Email image of 2-d works that are install-ready and artist bio (30 words) to Dr. April Durham, Arts + Culture Project Manager by May 30, 2018.
