Sacramento Youth Symphony

Founded in 1956 as a 55-member youth orchestra, the Sacramento Youth Symphony (SYS), under the artistic direction of Michael Neumann, now has a membership of more than 400 talented young musicians from all over the Sacramento Valley region. The Symphony is a non-profit organization. SYS offers beginning through advanced orchestral ensembles (for Ages 6-21), and presents more than 20 concerts per year under the baton of some of the best music educators and conductors in the region. Its mission is to educate and advance the musical skills of youth within our community in ways that engage, challenge, and inspire. Its programs are designed specifically to bridge music and academic subjects, teaching orchestra ethics and appropriate social behavior. In doing so, students gain self-esteem, self-expression, discipline, and a sense of teamwork.

Sascha Molina

Sascha Molina is the Assistant Director of Sacramento Taiko Dan, (the Sacramento region’s premier Japanese drumming group), and the Director of the Sacramento Taiko Dan Youth Ensemble. Sascha tours as an independent artist and regularly collaborates both with other taiko performers as well as artists from many disciplines including Vocal, Martial Arts and Dance. She continues to perform across the United States, Canada, and Japan, while simultaneously instructing at Sacramento Taiko Dan as well as pursuing further training for continued growth. As an instructor, Sascha focuses on giving youth players opportunities to grow and learn a myriad of life skills through music and cultural literacy. Sascha has designed taiko curriculum for youth aged K-12 that combines rhythm and whole body movement with Japanese history, culture, and language skills. This blend of physical and musical discipline gives students an in-depth and hands-on experience in the arts as individuals, partners, and as members of a group.

Theo Scott Feminella (aka MADK@P)

Theo is a drummer, rapper, and music producer born and raised in Sacramento. He has mentored and taught youth in Twin Rivers Unified School District and Roberts Family Development Center where he mentors middle school youth through his Beatmakerz Program. “When most teachers don't look like me, that provides me a great chance to break stereotypes and role model for black and brown students who don't have a mentor they can see themselves in. I always walk into a classroom recognizing I am a mirror for my students. On top of that, I must advocate for them in ways they don't know how to do for themselves.”

Tsubaki Ensemble

The Tsubaki Ensemble is an inter-generational Japanese-American performing ensemble that educates audiences about the Japanese culture through folk music, dance, and storytelling.

Tuba Tunes: Transforming Sound into Music

Join Julian Dixon, Principal Tuba of the Sacramento Philharmonic and Opera, as he shares his life as a professional musician and leads students through an inquiry into how sound waves are created and transformed into musical ideas that create moods, describe characters, and tell stories.
