2022 Burnett Awards

The Sacramento History Alliance is proud and excited to announce the prestigious 2022 Burnett Awards. The high-profile evening gala will be held for the first time in the expansive and recently remodeled lobby of the Sacramento History Museum. A benefit fundraiser for the Sacramento History Museum, the fast-paced ticketed event is sponsored by Burnett and Sons Planing Mill and Lumber Company, Bank of Marin, and SMUD.

The Burnett Awards are named in honor of the late Burnett Miller – a native Sacramentan, former mayor, community icon, philanthropist, business leader, and one of the city’s most prominent history enthusiasts. Each year, the Sacramento History Alliance honors local legacy businesses that have met and withstood the test of time and are recognized contributors to the community culture in the Sacramento region.

The 2022 Burnett Award honorees include the following:

-Arareity Jewelers: The beautiful jewelry and glass gallery in downtown Sacramento first opened in 1974 by Carole Koblik. Arareity is meant to describe a gallery presenting a varied and unique collection of artisan jewelry and objects.

-Osaka-Ya: The historic confections shop and bakery at 10th and V Streets in the central city has been a staple for snow cones, fruit freezes, root beer floats, manju, and mochi since Kenji Nakatani and wife Asako Sato established it in 1963.

-Julius Clothing: Celebrating its 100th anniversary, the retail store was opened by clothier Julius Anapolsky initially as an exclusive men’s shop, adding women’s fashions in 1977. Still operated by the Anapolsky family, the shop remains a staple for high-end fashion.

-Lionakis: Founded more than 110 years ago by California’s first state architect George Sellon, this firm specializes in architectural, structural engineering, green/sustainable design, interior design, and master planning for commercial, education, civic, and health care clients.

-Tower Theater: A landmark since its construction in 1938, the theater was designed in the streamline modern style by California theater architect William B. David for Joseph Blumenfeld and family, it is the oldest continuously operating film theater in Sacramento.

-New this year, a special Community Partner Award will be presented to the Sacramento Public Library that first opened in 1879 with approximately 6,000 books to serve a city of 21,000.

The Sacramento History Museum is supported by the Sacramento History Alliance, a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization that also manages the Sacramento Visitors Center, Old Sacramento Underground Tours, Gold Fever! Games, Anytime Tours, and Living History Programs, and works collaboratively with the City of Sacramento to support the Center for Sacramento History.
