Birding Deer Creek

Join experienced docents for a guided birding tour through a secluded portion of Deer Creek Hills Preserve.

Meet promptly at 6:30am at the corner of Stonehouse and Latrobe Roads. They have an early start to avoid the heat and see the best bird activity. You will caravan to Deer Creek Hills North promptly at 6:45am. This is a rare opportunity to join the birding docents on a trip to the northern part of the preserve, which is not on any of the self-guided hiking loops. Spring migration should bring the opportunity for surprises in the way of warblers and flycatchers. Lawrence’s Goldfinches adore this place and they often get the opportunity to observe them in close proximity. Violet-green swallows are nesting now too.

This is a three mile cross country trek, in medium to tall grass. Foxtails are in full swing by late May so plan accordingly. Mute toned clothing please and no stark white. Bring your binoculars and scope. Docents will have at least one scope for the group. Bring water, a snack and your curiosity. We will stop for a snack (early lunch) break at a beautiful vantage point above Deer Creek.
