Cantos del Pueblo pays homage to Raza music, singers, musicians, and composers, as well as Raza music in general. La música del pueblo (the music of the people) plays a very important role in the lives of mexicanos in México and in the United States. It is part of their lives’ soundtracks, and is connected to specific memories. These memories can be of mothers making domestic chores to the rhythms of Juan Gabriel, weekend parties with José Alfredo Jiménez singing loudly while fathers cook meat on the grill, marching and protesting to the rhythms of Chunky Sánchez and Los Alacranes Mojados or just watching Antonio Aguilar movies on Sundays with the whole family. Cantos del Pueblo wants to honor those singers and those collective memories of growing up Raza.
This exhibit is a humble Día de Los Muertos homage to the music of the Mexican people. A music that is rooted in the feelings of the heart, in the heroic actions of men and women, and in the collective alegría spirit of el pueblo.
