“Cities In Color” features abstract artwork depicting the spirit of cities around the world. The colorful and lively abstract paintings leave the viewer recounting memories of places they too have visited, or would like to see. Jeffrey Tover’s paintings are bold and vibrant, exploring color and mark-making and sporting titles such as “Berlin,” “Chicago,” “Beijing,” and “Sacramento.” For this exhibit, he has drawn inspiration from his travels. Particularly impressed with the gestural mark-making and color palettes of a group of artists he discovered in Australia, he set out to create this current body of work.
Tover is a prolific painter and Bay Area native who has found his extensive traveling contributes to the evolution of his art-making practice. He is influenced by the work of Cy Twombly, Joan Mitchell, and Willem DeKooning. His studio is located in the Benicia Arsenal area, a bustling colony of artists. He paints without fear and leaves the interpretation open to the viewer. In his words, the paintings are “meant to invoke their own persona and therefore influence the viewer in different ways.” Tover’s work is collected Internationally and can be found in public and commercial collections.
