Juneteenth: A Celebration of Freedom

Juneteenth, A Celebration of Freedom, is an annual event at the North Sacramento Family Resource Center in honor of the oldest known celebration of the end of slavery in the United States.

June 19, 1865 was the day that news finally made it all the way West to Galveston, Texas that slavery had been abolished by law.

It took two and a half years after the signing of Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation for the news to make it to enslaved African American people in Texas that they were supposed to be free all along! So, Juneteenth is a kind of Independence Day in the African American community that represents news that was long overdue!
