From 1822 until 1847 Alta California was loosely controlled by Mexican governors. These 25 years were the most turbulent and least understood in the history of California. In the mid-nineteenth century, the Church driven culture and government of old New Spain was unwillingly thrust into the world of secular politics and corruption. With Mexican independence, a “land and power grab” was on in Alta California. It was fueled by internal Mexican forces feeding on the declining authority of the Church and external Foreign forces wishing to take California from Mexico to secure a foothold in the Pacific. Into this tempest came thousands of immigrants looking for opportunity and inexpensive land — with some looking to establish their own sovereign nations.
