The USA Track and Field (USATF) Outdoor Championships are returning to Sacramento in 2017. The best track and field athletes in the country will compete to qualify for the IAAF World Championships next summer at Sacramento State’s Hornet Stadium.
After investing $1.2 million to resurface the track at Sacramento State’s Hornet Stadium in 2014, the Sacramento Sports Commission, a division of Visit Sacramento, received a commitment from USATF, the sport’s governing body, to bring the 2017 Outdoor Championships back to Sacramento.
Sacramento figures prominently in the history of USATF over the past 50 years, starting with a legend’s historic sprint in 1966 and continuing into 2016 with the USATF Junior Olympic Championships. Good facilities, excellent weather, and knowledgeable fans have earned Sacramento a star on the sport’s map of outstanding track cities.
