Where Souls Grow Wild

Trapped by worlds in which they have little power, the souls of these women are driven to wildness as they fight for survival and happiness. Although each of these pieces was written over 100 years ago, the struggle for women to achieve power, fulfillment, and self-determination feels strikingly relevant today.

In Susan Glaspell’s “Trifles,” directed by Shenandoah Kehoe, the small details of a woman’s life, easily dismissed as insignificant, provide clues in a murder mystery. Alice Gerstenberg’s “Overtones,” directed by Claudia Wrazel, is an early example of modern experimental theater that shows two cultured women at odds not only with each other but with their own passionate inner selves. And in J.M. Synge’s “Riders to the Sea,” directed by Andrew Fridae, an Irish mother and two sisters face a harsh reality as the sea steadily claims the lives of the men around them. 

The show will weave poetry and original music among the three plays for a moving and thought-provoking theatrical experience. Audiences are invited to join the cast and crew for a happy hour following each performance.
