Mamma Mia!, the musical that launched many international tours, two hit films — and Pierce Brosnan’s singing career — is making its Broadway at Music Circus premiere this week! (The last time Sacramento shimmied to ABBA’s greatest hits was in March 2012.) Lighthearted and nostalgic, the show brings a sunny Greek isle to the Wells Fargo Pavilion, offering audiences a much-needed escape from the valley’s current smoke-filled sky.
The plot centers around the madcap 24 hours before the wedding of young lovers Sophie Sheridan (Francesca Arostegui) and Sky (Michael Campayno). Raised by a fiercely independent mother, Donna (Michelle Dawson, making her Broadway at Music Circus debut), Sophie never knew her father. Set on having traditional nuptials, she goes in search of his identity, hoping he’ll walk her down the aisle.
Gleaning her mother’s journal entries, she narrows down potential candidates to three men: banker Harry Bright (Trey Ellett), thrill-seeker Bill Austin (Eric Petersen), and architect Sam Carmichael (Eric Kunze). (Ellipses […] will have a whole new meaning for you after the show.)
Naturally, she invites them all to her wedding. Naturally, chaos ensues.
Mamma Mia! however is much more than a Mediterranean Maury episode. A catchy ABBA soundtrack weaves regret (“S.O.S”), heartbreak (“The Winner Takes It All”), identity (“Under Attack”), and motherhood (“Slipping Through My Fingers”) seamlessly into the story. Personally, I couldn’t get enough of the fun “Lay All Your Love On Me” beach scene.
No doubt, you’ll leave the theatre humming and with an urge to wear a ruffled spandex jumpsuit.
Catch the sensational feel-good musical before it disembarks from the Wells Fargo Pavilion Sunday, August 12.
Note: Due to high demand, tickets for Mamma Mia! are extremely limited. Call or visit the Wells Fargo Pavilion Box Office at (916) 557-1999 or 1419 H Street in downtown Sacramento.
